Southfield, Mich.-based Corewell Health is expanding access to care across Southwest Michigan with new care centers, clinic expansions and workforce investments aimed at bringing services closer to where patients live.
The initiative includes new urgent care locations, expanded primary and specialty care services and housing for medical residents to strengthen the region’s future clinical workforce, according to the health system.
“We are hearing from communities that access to care needs to be closer to home and easier to reach,” Natalie Baggio, president of Corewell Health’s Southwest Michigan region, said in a July 15 news release. “These investments are one way we’re responding by expanding services where they’re needed and supporting the workforce that makes that care possible.”
Projects planned across the region include:
- South Haven: A new care center with urgent care and primary care services for a community that currently lacks a local urgent care option.
- Royalton: A new urgent care center to expand same-day care access.
- Bridgman: Expansion of a primary care practice with walk-in care, physical therapy and occupational therapy.
- Dowagiac: Expansion of primary care services and walk-in care.
- Niles: A new care center offering specialty services, along with new apartments for medical residents.
- St. Joseph: Expansion of the Lookout Point apartment complex to help address housing shortages for medical residents.
Corewell Health said the investments are designed to improve access across multiple communities while strengthening the workforce needed to sustain care over the long term.
“Access to care should not depend on how far someone has to travel or how difficult it is to find the right place to go,” Matt Cox, executive vice president and CFO of Corewell Health, said. “These investments are about making sure people can get the care they need, when they need it, right in their own community.”
The projects will be completed on varying timelines over the coming months and years.
The expansion follows a strong financial year for the 21-hospital system. Corewell Health reported a $276 million operating income (1.6% margin) in 2025, up from $208 million (1.3% margin) in 2024, while operating revenue increased 7.5% year over year to $17.6 billion. The system also ended the year with 214.4 days cash on hand, up from 200.2 in 2024.
