The Delaware Health Resources Board has approved Newark, Del.-based ChristianaCare to build a $75 million, 73-bed freestanding acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Newark.
The 92,000-square-foot facility is part of ChristianaCare’s three-year plan to invest more than $865 million in expanding its footprint across Delaware, according to a March 30 news release shared with Becker’s.
The hospital will comprise a range of inpatient rehabilitation services, including occupational, physical and speech therapy. It will also feature on-site diagnostics and imaging, like X-ray, ultrasound and swallowing studies.
ChristianaCare’s existing Center for Rehabilitation at Wilmington Hospital will transition its 40 licensed beds, alongside 33 new ones, to the facility. Wilmington Hospital will then be repurposed as an inpatient step-down unit.
The health system plans to break ground in partnership with Onix Group, a real estate development firm, in early 2027, with an anticipated summer 2028 opening. The facility is expected to add approximately 122 new jobs.
“This new facility will enable us to expand access to care in a new state-of-the-art facility that’s designed specifically for the experts at our Center for Rehabilitation and the patients they care for,” Bradley Sandella, DO, clinical leader of ChristianaCare’s medical subspecialties service line, said in the release.
