Johnson City, Tenn.-based Ballad Health has purchased land to build a new $44 million Unicoi (Tenn.) County Hospital.
The land purchase price was $2.5 million, a spokesperson for Ballad Health confirmed with Becker’s.
The hospital will replace the original Unicoi County Hospital that closed in September 2024 after it suffered flooding from Hurricane Helene and was rendered unsafe. Ballad Health shared plans to rebuild the hospital in late January.
The health system will hold a groundbreaking Aug. 19 for the new facility, according to a July 22 news release shared with Becker’s.
Unicoi County Hospital will comprise an emergency department, 10 inpatient beds and outpatient services. Construction on the new facility is expected to take 18 to 24 months, the release said.
Ballad Health comprises 20 hospitals, post-acute care and behavioral health services and a multi-specialty group physician practice.
