The Health Care Authority of the City of Huntsville — which oversees Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital Health System — received certificates of need to build two freestanding emergency departments, al.com reported July 7.
X things to know:
1. The estimated cost of each facility is $41 million, which includes the first year of operating expenses, according to the report.
2. The certificates of need come one year after the health system announced plans to two build two freestanding EDs in the city. Huntsville Hospital Health System President and CEO Jeff Samz said in a July 14, 2025 news release that no part of Alabama is growing faster than Huntsville and the system is “taking definitive steps to increase access to emergency care in every part of our community.”
3. Both freestanding EDs will offer walk-in access along with MRI, CT and lab capabilities. Huntsville Hospital Health System plans to break ground in September, with completion expected in late 2027 or early 2028.
