Adventist gets $200M settlement after hospital destroyed in wildfire

Adventist Health settled with Pacific Gas and Electric Company's Fire Victim Trust for $200 million for the loss of its Feather River Hospital in Paradise, Calif., during the 2018 Camp Fire, The Press Democrat reported May 10.

Roseville, Calif.-based Adventist initially sought a $1 billion claim, according to the report. The 23-hospital system reportedly received 60 percent of the $200 million settlement.

The payout represents a significant portion of Fire Victim Trust, a fund established out of PG&E's bankruptcy to pay damage claims to victims of utility-caused wildfires dating from 2015, according to the report. Those claims include the 2018 Camp Fire, which burned Adventist's Paradise hospital to the ground.

The 100-bed facility, which was the only provider and the largest employer in Paradise, was a critical health resource and economic driver to the town. It has been shuttered since fire and water damage rendered it inoperable.

Adventist told The Press Democrat that the health system will not reopen the hospital, but is investing $2 million to expand a clinic in the area.
