Wave of Camp Fire burn victims treated at Sacramento hospital

Sacramento, Calif.-based UC Davis Medical Center treated 12 burn patients from the California Camp Fire at once on Nov. 8, according to Fox 40.

"We kind of got overwhelmed at the university, so we actually asked Shriners [Hospitals for Children] to take a couple of the adults just to decompress us for a while," said David Greenhalgh, MD, a physician at UC Davis Medical Center.

Dr. Greenhalgh indicated the patients came to the hospital Nov. 8. There were 12 adults, including one firefighter, seeking burn treatment. Dr. Greenhalgh told Fox 40 that he expected to treat more burn victims. The Camp Fire has killed 79 people and displaced tens of thousands of people. More than 700 people have been reported missing.

One burn victim had about half of his body burned. It will take months for him to recover.

"People tend to forget that the recovery from a big burn takes up to a year and sometimes even longer to go through the whole changes in their skin and their scars. So it’s a long, hard process," Dr. Greenhalgh told Fox 40.
