Google and GitHub partnered to bring new software development tools from the tech giant onto the open-source code repository.
The partnership revolves around Cloud Build, a continuous integration tool Google unveiled at the company's recent Google Cloud Next conference in San Francisco, TechCrunch reports. It allows developers to build and test applications in the cloud while working across various programming languages, streamlining workflows for developers who use multiple tools to build software.
Under the agreement, developers can now access Cloud Build on the GitHub Marketplace. And if GitHub detects a Docker file on the repository without a continuous integration tool set up, it will automatically suggest adding a tool from the GitHub Marketplace — with Google's tool shown prominently in these prompts, according to TechCrunch.
"The release of Cloud Build on GitHub Marketplace is the first step in an exciting partnership," Melody Meckfessel, vice president of engineering at Google Cloud, said in a July 26 GitHub blog post announcing the collaboration. "Google Cloud and GitHub share a vision for developer productivity and we look forward to continuing to build on this partnership."
GitHub's partnership with Google comes nearly two months after Microsoft announced it had reached an agreement to acquire the code repository for $7.5 billion. At the time, some developers expressed concern GitHub would favor Microsoft products after the acquisition.
