Here are three things to know about the new position:
1. TechCrunch characterized Mr. Cheng as a “well-respected ‘low level’ computer engineer” who had previously led programming languages and runtimes at Facebook.
2. Prior to joining Facebook three years ago, Mr. Cheng spent nearly 10 years at Apple, including a stint as the company’s senior manager of low level tools.
3. Facebook has been building out its blockchain team in recent months. David Marcus, who previously led Facebook Messenger, announced he would lead the company’s effort to explore blockchain in May, according to a separate TechCrunch report. Kevin Weil, a former vice president at Instagram, recently took on the role of vice president of product for blockchain at Facebook.
