The center will bring together AI, cognitive science and life science researchers to investigate how to enhance quality of life and independence for aging populations. The collaborators will leverage AI to analyze massive amounts of data in an effort to study healthy aging and the human microbiome.

The collaborators plan to study how daily habits, environments, genetics and the microbiome affect older adults’ cognition capabilities. During the next five years, the project will also deploy personalized interventions to support the health of aging populations.

The partnership is part of the IBM Cognitive Horizons Network, an international consortium of universities that work with IBM to develop AI technologies. For John Kelly III, PhD, senior vice president of cognitive solutions and IBM Research at IBM, the UC San Diego partnership aids the company’s focus on “problems that impact human lives.”

“We’re committed to collaborating with the best minds in academia to inspire the next generation of scientists,” he said. “This new collaboration with UC San Diego is the latest example of how we’re executing on this AI vision.”
