Under the new budget, the National Science Foundation would reportedly receive $850 million for AI research, up from about $500 million, while the U.S. Defense Department’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency would see its AI funding jump from $50 million to $249 million.
Approximately $50 million of the National Science Foundation’s funding would go toward training AI experts, in an effort to attract tech talent away from big tech companies.
The Trump administration’s proposed budget would also set aside $25 million to build a national “quantum internet” to protect the nation from attacks by ultra-powerful quantum computers. According to the Times, researchers would use the funding to build a network connecting 17 national research labs, which would then inform the construction of a larger, nation-spanning secure network.
The proposed increases for AI and quantum spending came alongside potential cuts to general scientific research efforts, as well as the NIH, CDC and Medicaid.
