Gartner: AI to create more jobs than it replaces by 2020

In 2020, artificial intelligence will become a "positive job motivator," creating more jobs than it eliminates, according to a Gartner report released Dec. 13.

Here are three insights into AI's effect on employment trends.

1. Advances in AI will result in an additional 2.3 million jobs in 2020, while eliminating 1.8 million middle- and low-level positions, according to the report. AI will create positions related to both low-skilled entry-level jobs and skilled management jobs.

2. A substantial amount of jobs created from the AI revolution will focus on augmenting existing tasks, generating $2.9 trillion in business value and recovering 6.2 billion in hours of worker productivity.

3. Gartner researchers emphasized the number of jobs affected by AI will vary by industry. Healthcare is one of the sectors most likely to see continuous job growth through 2019, along with the public sector and education. The manufacturing industry will be hit the hardest in terms of job elimination.

"Many significant innovations in the past have been associated with a transition period of temporary job loss, followed by recovery, then business transformation, and AI will likely follow this route," said Svetlana Sicular, research vice president at Gartner.
