In a move poised to reshape AI infrastructure in the U.S., three technology firms — OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle — have joined forces to create Stargate, a project that aims to revolutionize AI's physical and virtual framework, CNN reported Jan. 21.
The announcement, made at the White House on Jan. 21 with President Donald Trump, aims to secure the nation's position as a global leader in AI.
Here are five things to know about Stargate:
- Stargate, described by President Trump as the "largest AI infrastructure project in history," will begin with a $100 billion investment, with projections to scale up to $500 billion.
- The initiative is expected to generate 100,000 U.S. jobs and will include massive data centers across the country, beginning with a 1-million-square-foot facility already under construction in Texas.
- The project, spearheaded by Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, aims to address critical infrastructure needs for AI advancements.
- OpenAI has emphasized the strategic importance of U.S.-led AI infrastructure, citing competition with China as a driving factor. In a recent policy paper, OpenAI warned that without significant investment, the U.S. risks ceding influence to China in AI capabilities critical to economic and military strength.
- Oracle echoed this sentiment, stating that Stargate would "secure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and bolster national security."
Stargate's formation comes shortly after President Trump rescinded former President Joe Biden's 2023 executive order which sought to monitor and regulate AI risks.
