UnitedHealthcare to launch ACO with Rhode Island's largest IPA

UnitedHealthcare announced an accountable care organization agreement with Cranston-based Rhode Island Primary Care Physicians for approximately 15,000 beneficiaries in the state with employer-sponsored health plans.

These beneficiaries will automatically be enrolled in the ACO if they are patients of any of RIPCPC's 130 physicians, according to the report.

The goal of the ACO is to improve care coordination and reduce costs. RIPCPC providers will help coordinate care and are eligible for incentives if they improve the quality of care based on specific measurable factors. These factors include hospital readmission rates, disease management, cost savings and patient safety and satisfaction, according to the report.

UnitedHealthcare reports $36 billion in physician and hospital reimbursements from ACOs and value-based arrangements, a figure that has almost tripled in three years. The health insurance giant expects $65 billion in reimbursements by 2018, according to the report.
