Largest payer, provider in Kansas partner for new ACO

BlueCross BlueShield of Kansas and the Via Christi Healthier You Alliance in Accountable Care have signed a multi-year, value-based agreement, effective Jan. 1.

Three years ago, Wichita, Kan.-based Via Christi launched an ACO called Healthier You Alliance in Accountable Care, which participates in the Medicare Shared Savings Program and includes a plan for Via Christi employees and dependents. The Blue Cross agreement will bring Via Christi's ACO coverage to approximately 68,000 patients.

The new BCBS-Via Christi agreement begins with annual shared savings if Via Christi is able to met specific quality and cost measures. In years to come, Via Christi will continue to share in savings, but will also assume downside risk, according to a statement.

The agreement will not replace fee-for-service medicine, according to the statement. However, it will provide additional incentives to enhance the patient experience and overall health in a cost-effective way.
