Highmark Moves Toward Accountable Care With New Alliance

Health insurer Highmark in Pittsburgh has formed an accountable care alliance within its newly formed Allegheny Health Network.

The alliance will include physicians from Allegheny Health Network and the following six hospitals:

•    Allegheny General Hospital (Pittsburgh)
•    Allegheny Valley Hospital (Natrona Heights, Pa.)
•    Canonsburg (Pa.) General Hospital
•    Forbes Regional Hospital (Monroeville, Pa.)
•    Jefferson Regional Medical Center (Jefferson Hills, Pa.)
•    The Western Pennsylvania Hospital (Pittsburgh)

Highmark plans to expand the program to include other physicians and hospitals. The alliance aims to improve care coordination among providers, as well as improve quality of care and "accelerate the movement" to paying providers for value, according to a news release.

"We need to be paying for value and not just volume. This collaborative arrangement will lead the transition to a modernized and more efficient delivery system that offers the opportunity to improve quality and achieve better health outcomes for patients and improve the patient experience," Mike Fiaschetti, president of heath markets for Highmark, said in the release.
