8 statistics on the 2017 Medicare Shared Savings Program

The Medicare Shared Savings Program comprised 480 ACOs in 2017, according to CMS.

Here are eight statistics on MSSP ACOs this year from CMS' Fast Facts.

1.  MSSP ACOs covered 9 million beneficiaries in 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

2. Ninety-one percent of MSSP ACOs, or 438, committed to one-sided risk under Track 1 designation.

3. Six ACOs committed to two-sided risk under Track 2 designation. 

4. The remaining 36 are two-sided risk ACOs under Track 3 designation. 

5. Sixty-two percent of MSSP ACOs cover a large metro population, whereas 12 percent cover a small metro population. Twenty-six percent cover an area with metro and rural populations.

6. The city with the most MSSP ACOs is Atlanta with 135. Seattle has the fewest with nine.

7. Fifty-six percent of MSSP ACOs include individual practice networks, while 36 percent include group practices

8. Fifteen percent of MSSP ACOs comprise a rural health clinic, and 11 percent have a critical access hospital.
