Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Medicine plans to build a $50 million small-format hospital in St. Clairsville, Ohio, The Times Leader reported March 13.
Douglass Harrison, regional president at WVU Medicine and president and CEO of WVU Medicine Wheeling (W.Va.) Hospital, shared the plans March 12 during the St. Clairsville Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards dinner.
The project is pending hospital board approval in April. If approved, WVU Medicine plans to begin construction and open the facility in about 16 months, Mr. Harrison said, according to the Times.
“We are extremely excited to make this over $50 million investment into Belmont County. We are extremely excited about this opportunity and what it means to create more access for the residents of Belmont County in this Ohio market,” Mr. Harrison said, according to the Times.
The hospital would be built on roughly 40 acres WVU Medicine purchased four years ago near the Ohio Valley Mall, Mr. Harrison said.
A WVU Medicine spokesperson told Becker’s a more formal announcement about the project is expected in mid-April.
The West Virginia University Health System, which operates under the brand WVU Medicine, is West Virginia’s largest health system, with 25 hospitals across West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. It employs more than 35,000 people, according to its website.
