A new program designed by a Decatur, Ill.-based university and a hospital’s charitable foundation will provide eligible nursing students up to $50,000 in scholarships and tuition assistance.
On May 11, Decatur Memorial Foundation and Millikin University announced their partnership and creation of the Millikin-Memorial Nursing Scholars Program. Supported by donors to the Decatur Memorial Foundation, the program is built to ease financial burdens for nursing students and fortify the nursing workforce in Decatur, according to a news release.
Each year, the program will select six students from an applicant pool. To be eligible, students must be a junior or senior in a bachelor of science in nursing degree program or a master’s entry into nursing practice.
As they work to earn their degrees, the students will work with nurses at Decatur Memorial Hospital for a minimum of 16 hours per month. After graduation, they will also have a three-year work commitment at the hospital, which is part of Springfield, Ill.-based Memorial Health.
In the release, Teresa Gulley, PhD, RN, director of the Millikin University School of Nursing, said the program “allows students to focus more fully on their academic and clinical preparation rather than working substantial hours to meet financial needs.”
