Changing the course of success: Cardinal Health’s dual strategies

Cardinal Health recently acquired the Cordis unit of Johnson & Johnson in early March. Cardinal Health, who is known for its drug and medical distribution, has been growing its manufacturing side in recent years.

Cardinal senior vice president Steven Halper told Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry that acquiring Cordis is “sort of a direct outgrowth of the need to reinvest and grow the business.”

Cardinal is unique in its ability to be both a distributor and a manufacturer.

Cardinal Health CEO Don Casey notes that the company thought about “How do we look at categories that have strong physician preference, diminishing clinical differentiation, low intellectual property barriers and is a pain point for the hospital?”
