After critics claimed CMS’ initial application for subsidies was too long for consumers, CMS stripped it down to a shorter version that it will use on the exchanges HHS builds or facilitates. The new rule announced yesterday allows states running their own exchanges to use a different application, even one that screens for many social services like food stamp eligibility on the same form, so long as it gathers all the necessary federal information and allows customers to use a health insurance-only form as well.
