Brown Health Medical Group, part of Providence, R.I.-based Brown University Health, will merge with Brown Physicians Inc. to improve patient access and care coordination.
The merger is expected to be finalized Oct. 1, according to a Sept. 30 Brown University Health news release.
In striking an agreement with the state attorney general, the attorney general suspended an antitrust investigation into the proposed merger, which was initiated in fall 2024, according to a Sept. 30 news release from Attorney General Peter Neronha’s office. As part of the conditions in the agreement, Brown University Health will take on 40,000 new primary care patients by Dec. 31, 2029, and hire up to 27 new primary care providers to increase care access.
BPI is a multispecialty practice group led by faculty affiliated with Brown University’s medical school. Its six foundations — dermatology, emergency medicine, medicine, neurology, surgery and urology — will integrate into the Brown Health Medical Group, a physician-led multi-specialty group within Brown University Health.
The merger will unify more than 1,500 providers across Rhode Island and the region. BPI will contribute more than 500 physicians to the group.
