North Shore Medical Center in Salem, Mass., part of Boston-based Partners HealthCare, is one step closer to building its new behavioral health center thanks to a $5 million funding pledge.

The funding pledge, from hospital board member Arthur Epstein, is considered to be the single largest donation in NSMC’s history.

“North Shore Medical Center is deeply grateful for Arthur Epstein’s extraordinary support,” NSMC President David Roberts, MD, said in a news release. “There is increasing demand for behavioral health services across the country and throughout local communities here on the North Shore. Arthur’s generosity will enable NSMC to build a state-of-the-art facility to provide much needed care to the children, adults and seniors of this region.”

The planned 90-bed behavioral health center is part of the hospital’s $207 million project to consolidate hospital-based medical, surgical, behavioral health and emergency care in Salem, NSMC officials said. The behavioral health center will be located in the former Spaulding Hospital North Shore.

“The facility will be aligned with Massachusetts General Hospital [in Boston] and add 24 new beds to the region for psychiatry and behavioral healthcare. It will integrate addiction treatment with inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, mental health services and further development of community-based programs,” officials added.

The facility is slated to open in fall 2019.
