Here are five things to know about National Hospital Week, which runs May 7 to May 13.
1. National Hospital Week dates back to 1921. Typically, National Hospital Week takes place the week of May 12, the birthday of famed nurse Florence Nightingale, according to Whiteville, N.C.-based Columbus Regional Healthcare System.
2. National Hospital Week celebrates the work of hospitals and their employees, including physicians, nurses, therapists, engineers, food service workers, volunteers and administrators. Overall, more than 5 million people work in U.S. hospitals, according to the American Hospital Association.
3. This year’s National Hospital Week theme is “The healing heart of healthcare.”
4. AHA encourages hospitals to share the association’s “thank you” video with their workers and their communities.
5. The AHA also asks hospitals to use the #HospitalWeek hashtag for related announcements and comments. Hospitals and other medical organizations have already taken to Twitter to talk about the work hospitals and their employees do.
