Reading (Pa.) Health System. Reading HealthPlex for Advanced Surgical & Patient Care, opened October 2016, exemplifies the health system’s commitment to sustainable business practices. At 88,000 square feet, the facility boasts the third-largest green roof on a healthcare building in the U.S. The roof reduces the “heat island” effect generated by conventional asphalt rooftops to improve air quality and saves energy by providing greater insulation while offering a therapeutic healing environment for patients. The new facility includes 24 operating rooms designed with sustainable practices in mind, replacing sterilizers and washers with a more efficient model for cleaning and sterilizing equipment estimated to use around one-eight to one-fifth of the water previously used.
