Iowa Methodist Medical Center (Des Moines). Iowa Methodist Medical Center, part of UnityPoint Health, is committed to reducing operating room waste, and created a partnership with Iowa Prison Industries in October 2015 to do so. Through the partnership, hospital nurses collect and seal containers full of plastic and cardboard surgical equipment and then deliver the containers to Iowa Prison Industries. From there, inmates sort the items, which are then returned to the hospital for recycling. Even though the program is just barely a year old, it has diverted nearly two tons of materials form the landfill into recycling.
