Hackensack University Medical Center. HackensackUMC was founded in 1888 with 12 beds and served as Bergen County’s first hospital. Now the hospital has 775 beds and serves the northern New Jersey and New York metro areas. The medical center includes the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, Donna A. Sanzari Women’s Hospital, John Theurer Cancer Center, David & Alice Jurist Institute for Research and the Heart & Vascular Hospital, along with three other HackensackUMC campuses.
Ranked the No. 1 hospital in New Jersey by U.S. News & World Report in its 2015-16 rankings, HackensackUMC was also nationally ranked in five adult specialties. The hospital has been designated as a Magnet facility by the American Nurses Credentialing Center since 1995. Additionally, Healthgrades listed HackensackUMC among its 100 Best Hospitals for stroke care and neurosciences in 2016. In 2014 and 2015, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation recognized HackensackUMC as a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality.
In addition to its commitment to high-quality care, HackensackUMC has also proven its commitment to protecting the environment by transitioning to LED lighting and using energy-efficient chillers and a biodigester to divert food from landfills. Last year, HackensackUMC earned a spot on Practice Greenhealth’s list of Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award honorees.
