The Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). The Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute provides a full range of surgical interventions, including traditional surgeries like valve replacements and more complex procedures like off-pump coronary bypasses. The hospital opened its heart and lung transplant center in 1983 as the fourth such center in the U.S. Today, the hospital averages 20 heart transplants per year and provides stabilization services as patients await transplantation. Johns Hopkins Hospital has received national recognition for its heart services, including the No. 6 spot on U.S. News & World Report's ranking of top hospitals for cardiology and cardiac surgery in 2017. CareChex ranked the hospital No. 3 in Maryland for major cardiac surgery.
