University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is home to the UI Heart and Vascular Center and was named one of the best hospitals in cardiology and heart surgery for 2014-2015 by U.S. News & World Report. UI Heart and Vascular Center was the first commercial program in Iowa to host a transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure in 2011, and it was also the first center in the upper Midwest to send a patient home supported with a total artificial heart that year. UI Heart and Vascular Center is designated a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center Plus for cardiac care and has received certification from The Joint Commission for its ventricular assist device program to treat patients with advanced heart failure. It is also designated as a Magnet hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for nursing excellence.
