The MedStar Heart Institute, headquartered at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, has received a three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the highest rating the society gives. It was also ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 50 hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery in the country. The institute stays on the cutting edge of cardiovascular research and its physicians were instrumental in progressing research to successfully implant and manage left ventricular assist devices, which support diseased or damaged heart muscle. The MedStar Cardiovascular Research Network allows patients the opportunity to be involved in clinical trials, including drug eluting stent registries and carotid stent trials.
