The Minneapolis Heart Institute was formed in 1981 and merged with Abbott Northwestern in 1995. The hospital is nationally ranked in cardiology and heart services and is ranked No. 2 overall in Minnesota for those services by U.S. News & World Report for 2014-15. Abbott Northwestern Hospital also is one of CareChex’s top 50 hospitals for cardiac care, was named a Blue Distinction Center for cardiac care by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota and is Magnet-accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. In May 2014, a cardiologist from the Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital became the first physician in the Midwest to implant the world’s smallest pacemaker in a patient. The Minneapolis Heart Institute also was one of the first to perform a double-lung transplant in the U.S. and was the first in the country to use an artificial vein graft in bypass surgery.
