University of Virginia Medical Center (Charlottesville). Spine surgeons at the University of Virginia Medical Center, a designated Blue Distinction Center+ for spine surgery, perform 1,500-plus spine procedures annually. Researchers with the University of Virginia Medical Center's department of neurosurgery are studying treatments for glioblastomas, including a device with four electrode pads that attach to the scalp, which is powered by a portable battery and emits low-level alternating electric fields to treat tumors. The University of Virginia Health System's UVMC is a Level 1 trauma center providing neurotrauma care to a population of around 800,000 people in central Virginia, and is among the top three of 37 hospitals surveyed by the University Hospitals Consortium in survival rate for patients placed in the intensive care unit. The center's physicians are dedicated to advancing brain and spinal cord injury treatment, and are members of the UVa TBI Network, a multidisciplinary program focused on optimizing care, recovery and re-integration into the community for patients who suffer traumatic injuries.
