UPMC (Pittsburgh). UPMC, a 30-plus hospital health system with 6,000-plus licensed beds, has 13 research hospitals in its orthopedic surgery department. In 2015, UPMC orthopedic surgery department faculty received nearly $5 million in funding to support faculty research efforts, including studying the treatment of orthopedic infections using activated adult mesenchymal stem cells. Within UPMC’s orthopedic surgery department, there are between 75 and 80 surgeons on staff. The department supports the Sports and Preventative Medicine Institute, which is now located in the UPMC Sports Performance Complex. U.S. News & World Report ranked Pittsburgh-based UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside among the top 50 hospitals in the country for adult orthopedics.
