Penn Presbyterian Medical Center features 48 orthopedic physicians and various subspecialty centers that see 7,370 orthopedic patients on average annually. The hospital’s orthopedists were a part of the team that performed the world’s first successful pediatric bilateral hand transplant, which took place at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In fiscal year 2017, the department of orthopedics at Penn Medicine, including the Penn Presbyterian service line, was able to invest around $14 million in research activities, including those focused on reducing opioid prescription rate and use as well as alternative pain management protocols.
