Children’s National Health System (Washington, D.C.). Children’s National Health System’s main hospital has grown from a 12-bed facility opened in 1870 to a 313-bed hospital. Children’s National’s main hospital is home to the Children’s Research Institute and the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation and receives substantial funding from the National Institutes of Health. In fiscal year 2015, the medical staff at Children’s Hospital treated 219,747 patients and performed 16,979 surgeries.
