Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). In 1902, the first brain surgery in the United States was performed by Harvey Cushing, MD — known as the father of neurosurgery — at Johns Hopkins. The hospital has continued to grow its specialty program since then. For 2016-17, U.S. News & World Report ranked Johns Hopkins Hospital No. 1 in Maryland and No. 2 in the nation for neurology and neurosurgery.
