Intermountain Medical Center (Murray, Utah). Asthe flagship hospital of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare, Intermountain Medical Center consists of five interconnected centers of excellence encompassing 1.7 million square feet. The architectural conception and construction of this high-tech facility took over 10 years and cost $572 million. The hospital has 454 beds, making it the largest hospital in Utah.

In its 2015-16 rankings, U.S. News & World Report ranked Intermountain Medical Center as the No. 1 hospital in both the Salt Lake City metropolitan area and Utah. The hospital is involved with over 400 clinical research projects focused on advancing medical science to improve healthcare quality and efficiency. The facility also houses six intensive care units and a world-renowned mechanical/artificial heart transplant program. Other cutting-edge technology housed at Intermountain include the da Vinci Robot, a 3-D imaging system for mammography screening and hybrid operating rooms that allow heart catheterization procedures and cardiovascular surgery to take place simultaneously for patients with complex heart conditions.

Both the physical space and the processes implemented by hospital staff are geared toward enhancing privacy and family involvement. Creating a healing environment is one of Intermountain Medical Center's chief objectives. The facility's structure includes natural elements like gardens, fountains, mountain views, walking paths and organic building materials. The facility also offers patients and their families private alcoves, meditation rooms and a chapel.
