Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City). Hospital for Special Surgery, which opened its doors in 1863, is the nation's oldest orthopedic hospital. Today, surgeons at the 215-bed hospital perform more than 29,000 surgical procedures each year, with more hip surgeries and knee replacements performed than any other hospital in the U.S.

For the sixth consecutive year, HSS was ranked the top orthopedics hospital in the country by U.S. News & World Report in its 2015-16 rankings. Additionally, U.S. News ranked HSS nationally for rheumatology and geriatrics, ranking No. 3 and No. 7 in the nation, respectively. HSS is the first hospital in New York State to receive Magnet recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center three consecutive times.

HSS is the official hospital partner for 20 elite and professional sports organizations and four colleges, in addition to community and neighborhood organizations. It is recognized as the official hospital of USA Basketball and is designated as the first National Medical Center of the United States Olympic Committee's National Medical Network. The HSS residency program was ranked No. 1 by physician network Doximity.
