MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena (Mich.). MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena traces its roots to Alpena’s first community hospital, which opened in 1915 as the Donald McRae Hospital. A new 88-bed facility called Alpena General Hospital replaced it and is now licensed for 139 beds and has grown to employ more than 251 physicians and midlevel providers. Part of Midland-based MidMichigan Health, MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena was recognized among the 2017 Top 20 Rural Community Hospitals by the National Rural Health Association
