St. John Providence CRNAs face possible termination: 4 things to know

Certified registered nurse anesthetists at St. John Providence Hospital and Medical Center in Southfield, Mich., and St. John Providence Park Hospital in Novi, Mich., could face termination after they rejected a third-party employer contract that takes effect Jan. 1, according to a Crain's Detroit Business report.

Here are four things to know about the issue.

1. Providence recently secured a contract with PSJ Anesthesia PC to provide certified registered nurse anesthetist services to the two hospitals starting next year, according to corporate public relations director Daniela Scholl. However, more than 60 certified registered nurse anesthetists at the hospitals' surgery centers declined to sign an agreement to transition to PSJ by a Nov. 27 deadline.

2. Since the certified registered nurse anesthetists did not agree to transition by the deadline, they have been told their employment ends no later than Dec. 31, according to the report, which cites information from David Shea, managing partner of Shea Aiello, in Southfield and an attorney retained by the workers.

3. Signing the currently offered contract "will reach out and sink the value of CRNAs everywhere," the more than 60 holdouts said on Gofundme, which they set up to cover their legal expenses.

4. Six representatives of the more than 60 holdout nurses are scheduled to meet with Providence management Wednesday, although hospital officials did not disclose what the meeting will cover.
