Senate health committee plans hearing on high drug costs

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee will soon schedule a hearing to discuss prescription drug prices, reports The Hill.

Committee Chairman Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., on Tuesday released a letter sharing plans for the drug cost meeting.

In the letter, Sen. Alexander said the meeting will "help ensure that we are operating from similar understanding of the facts about drug spending and help inform what other topics we may explore."

A bipartisan group of lawmakers — led by committee members Sens. Bill Cassidy, R-La., and Al Franken, D-Minn. — requested the hearing, according to the report.

"Going forward, we need a comprehensive approach to identify trends related to growing drug spending, bring down overall healthcare costs, improve and reward quality, and promote innovation," said Mr. Cassidy and Mr. Franken, according to The Hill.
