Hurricane Harvey spurs widespread fuel shortages ahead of Labor Day weekend

Travelers should expect high gas prices and shortages this Labor Day weekend, as Hurricane Harvey has hindered operations at some of largest fuel pipelines and oil refineries in the U.S., reports Reuters.

Nearly 24 percent of the U.S.'s total oil refining capacity has been halted due to the hurricane. While there are nearly 250 million barrels of gasoline stockpiled in the U.S., most of the supplies are stored in areas inaccessible due to flooding or located too far away from the destinations that need oil. Major pipelines supplying the northeast market and Chicago area have shut down or limited operations since they have no fuel to pump, according to the report.

These shortages have driven up gas prices to the highest level this year.
