Medica, the nonprofit payer keeping 187 Midwestern counties insured

Based in a suburban Minneapolis, Medica is a small, nonprofit payer that covers roughly 700,000 people, with 137,000 of those in counties where it is the only insurer on the marketplace, according to Vox.

If Medica were to leave the ACA marketplace, 187 counties would be left without any choice of insurer. As many of the larger payers exit unprofitable marketplaces, Medica has been left to figure out how an operation of its size can continue to provide coverage during a time of great instability regarding healthcare law.

Creating contingency plans in case it remains the only payer in these markets or others enter, Medica is preparing for many scenarios, though the most important factor is how laws change under passage of the AHCA.
