How Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Humana and UnitedHealth performed in Q3

The five major U.S. health insurers posted strong results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2015, with each reporting revenue growth for the period.

1. Aetna reported revenue of nearly $15 billion in the third quarter of fiscal year 2015, up 2 percent from the same period a year ago. The Hartford, Conn.-based insurer posted net income of $560.1 million for the third quarter of FY 2015, up 6 percent over the same period of last year.

2. Indianapolis-based Anthem reported revenue of nearly $19.8 billion for the third quarter of fiscal year 2015, an increase of about 7.6 percent compared to the same period of 2014. The payer posted net income of $654.8 million for the third quarter of FY 2015, up from $630.9 million in the same period a year ago.

3. Cigna reported revenue of $9.4 billion in the third quarter of fiscal year 2015, up 7 percent year over year. The Bloomfield, Conn.-based insurer posted net income of $547 million in the third quarter of FY 2015, up from net income of $534 million in the same period a year ago.

4. Louisville, Ky.-based Humana reported revenue of $13.4 billion for the third quarter of fiscal year 2015, up 9 percent from the same period of last year. The insurer ended the third quarter of FY 2015 with net income of $314 million, up from $290 million in the same period of 2014.

5. Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group, which includes UnitedHealthcare and Optum, reported revenue of $41.5 billion for the third quarter of fiscal year 2015, up 27 percent from the same period a year ago. UnitedHealth posted net income of nearly $1.61 billion, up about 1 percent from the same period of 2014.
