Anthem Q4 profit tumbles 64%

Anthem saw its operating revenue rise in the fourth quarter of 2015, but the Indianapolis-based health insurer experienced a decrease in its individual business, causing its net income to dip 64 percent year over year to $180.9 million.

Anthem attributed the boost in fourth-quarter revenue to premium increases to cover overall cost trends and higher enrollment in its Medicaid and commercial self-funded businesses. As of Dec. 31, Anthem's Medicaid enrollment had grown by 721,000 members compared to the year prior.

Although the health insurer's Medicaid business grew, Anthem said its individual business fell by 118,000 members year over year.

Anthem ended the fourth quarter with net income of $180.9 million, down from $506.7 million in the same period of last year. The health insurer's net income for all of 2015 was almost flat at approximately $2.6 billion.
