Holly Hoyle O’Brien and her half-sister, Meagan Hughes, were orphaned in South Korea in the early 1970s. Unknowingly, they were adopted by two separate families. Ms. O’Brien, whose birth name is Pok-nam Shin, grew up in Virginia. Ms. Hughes, whose birth name is Eun-sook Shin, grew up 300 miles away in New York.
In January 2015, Ms. O’Brien began working as a nursing assistant at Sarasota, Fla.-based Doctors Hospital. Two months later, Ms. Hughes got a job at the same hospital as a physical therapy assistant. The sisters were assigned to the same shift on the fourth floor, according to Today News.
While at work, the sisters began talking and slowly discovered they shared a similar background. When they discovered they shared the same last name in Korean, they decided to get a DNA test — and found out they’re sisters.
