A resignation etched in frosting: How one nurse at Western State Hospital called it quits

A nurse at Western State Hospital in Lakewood, Wash., offered her official resignation in the form of a cake with the words "I quit" scrawled in frosting atop it, according to ABC News.

The "I quit" cake is just the most recent anecdote in series of unfavorable instances involving Western State. The psychiatric hospital has been mired in scandal this year, including patient escapes, potential leadership incarceration and severe staffing shortages.

Sara Childers, the resigned nurse, told ABC News she left Western State out of frustration with the bureaucracy and management that bar the hospital from becoming successful, though she stated that the onus for the hospital's failure stretched beyond Western State.

"This is not entirely all of Western State Hospital's fault," Ms. Childers said. "This is a community problem, a statewide problem and a cultural problem. Mental illness is extremely stigmatized."
