The 10 healthiest cities in America

iVantage Health Analytics analyzed more than 4,300 hospitals in the U.S. across the country and ranked the 10 "healthiest" metropolitan areas.

The healthiest cities included in iVantage's list are home to some of the hospitals the healthcare analytics provider designated as "top tier" hospitals.

iVantage analyzed and ranked hospitals based on wellness, cost and population management effects in their markets and ranked them into five tiers of statistically significant performance.

Ranked in the top tier are 572 hospitals; many of which are concentrated around 10 American cities.

Together, these 10 metropolitan serve approximately 42 million people, or roughly 13 percent of the U.S. population. They are listed below, starting with the most healthy:

1. Washington D.C. 

2. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.

3. Charlotte, N.C.

4. Virginia Beach, Va.

5. Portland, Ore.

6. Boston

7. Chicago

8. Philadelphia

9. Wyoming/Grand Rapids, Mich.

10. Atlanta
