Pearl River County Hospital Cuts 19 Jobs

Pearl River County Hospital and Nursing Home in Poplarville, Miss., has eliminated 19 positions and cut the hours of other employees, according to a report from the Picayune Item.

"Various types" of positions were eliminated, but none involved with providing direct patient care were affected, Pearl River administrator Steve Vaughan said, according to the report.

The hospital has been facing financial challenges of late. Cuts in Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements hit the hospital hard, and it is also being affected by "take-backs from Medicare and Medicaid for overpayments…submitted by prior management personnel," Mr. Vaughan said. The hospital has also experienced decreasing patient volumes.

In addition to the workforce reduction, Pearl River has outsourced some operations like food services, and leaders will look into if outsourcing other services will benefit the hospital, according to the report.
