Mountain States Health Alliance to Eliminate 161 Jobs

Johnson City, Tenn.-based Mountain States Health Alliance has announced plans to eliminate 116 filled positions and cut 45 vacant positions in a cost-cutting move.

MSHA is offering affected employees 90 days with full benefits and pay as the system helps them search for jobs within MSHA or with other organizations. MSHA is holding a recruitment fair to help affected employees find new jobs within the system. The system said direct patient care areas will not be affected.

In a news release, the system cited declining reimbursements and lower patient volumes as the reason for the workforce reduction.

"Mountain States Health Alliance is a strong organization that is positioned well to manage through these challenges," Alan Levine, president and CEO of MSHA, said in the release. "But we are not immune to the realities imposed on us. The problem would be dramatically worse for our local hospitals if we didn't act rationally on an ongoing basis to ensure our cost structure reflects the cuts we are expected to absorb."

The system has about 9,000 total jobs in its workforce.
