One of the affected employees held a nursing position, while the rest of the 17 workers were in administrative or support roles, according to the report. Laid off employees are receiving severance pay and networking assistance.
Monroe Hospital, a 32-bed hospital, has been financially struggling. Hospital CEO Joe Roche pointed to lower reimbursements from Medicare and Medicaid, as well as the rise of high-deductible health insurance plans that can decrease patient volumes, as reasons the cuts were necessary, according to the report.
The layoffs, along with contract negotiations and supply purchasing changes, are expected to save the hospital $4 million in the next year.
